The Time Has Come for Some Serious Weight Loss

The time has come for some serious weight loss. Too long have I lived the sedentary lifestyle and ate pretty much whatever I wanted. The past decade of my life I’ve toyed with the Atkins diet, diet pills, P90X, and other food eating habits and for the most part they all worked, but in the end, at 31 I’ve ballooned up from 150lbs to 200lbs. The irony of it all is at 5’6” my body is well equipped for athletics; I can play virtually any sport recreationally. However, I spend my time working 8 to 10 hour days sitting in from my computer, 5 days a week. At this point I realize that’s merely an excuse and the real reason for my weight gain in a mental one.

The key is reprogramming my brain for proper exercise. The human brain, in all its complexity, actually works on a reward based system. Furthermore, the human brain also looks for the easiest way to handle our bodies, e.g. the brain does adjustment to our bodies to find easy, not necessarily better, methods for doing push-ups, or pull-ups, and even walking and running. That being said, the best method of exercising, for myself, will be a mix of heavy jogging/running and for toning, muscle confusion. Muscle confusion is a method where sets aren’t done back to back, giving the brain little time to adjust the body for the easiest method of doing said exercise. This is the main core of the P90X program, and a method I fully subscribe too. As far as the reward system goes, my brain fully needs one day out of the week to physically do whatever I want and restrict myself to one meal of whatever it is I want to eat. My brain needs this, or it will get bored with program and with bland healthy foods.

My long-term goal is to have a BMI (Body Mass Index) of 25, as is stands now I’m punching in at 32.3. My short-term goal is loose 10lbs by the next doctor’s visit in the beginning of March.

To achieve these goals I need to institute new procedures and implement a new lifestyle. I’ve signed up to www.myfitnesspal.com and I’ve downloaded the iPhone app to my iPod to help me keep track of my foods by using a digital food diary and the website/app doubles as a workout dairy as well.

Wish me luck people.
